Tonsillitis is an acute or chronic inflammation of the tonsils, typically caused by bacteria, usally Streptococcus, but may also be casued by viral infection. The onset is sudden with pain on swallowing, chillness and fever. The tonsils become enlarged and exude a whitish, purulent substance and the glands of the throat may become tender and swollen.
